摘要

The outcome of preliminary surveys of surface operations typical of most South African gold mines suggests that consideration be given to the development and introduction of a formal risk management programme. In most respects a modification of traditional heat stress management practices would satisfy such a requirement. On the other hand, the extent to which non4onising radiation could be implicated as a significant potential health and safety risk adds a new dimension to any such initiative. For this reason, a brief review of non-ionising radiation and its consequences, as well as the essentials of a management process, was regarded as an important perspective. A modification of the Israeli Discomfort Index, to incorporate globe temperature, is proposed as a risk assessment instru-
