Optical fiber Bragg gratings is a recent novel and important component for communication and sensors applications. The technique commonly used for commercial production of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) involves exposure of photosensitive germanosilicate fiber cores to intense excimer laser radiation through an optical phase mask located in close proximity of the fiber. Fiber Bragg gratings were written using this technique in two different fiber samples and their strain and temperature sensing characteristics were investigated. The paper describes the various details of the technique used for fabricating fiber Bragg gratings and their characterisation.
