Water is life so its pollution is a major factor disturbing our environment, ecosystem and flora-fauna of our natural assets. Turbidity is an important parameter to determine the extent of impurity in water. For instant and integrated measurement of turbidity in water a microcontroller based turbiditymeter has been designed and developed. This paper describes a turbidity based on INTEL's microcontroller 8031. An 8-bit multichannel ADC converts the analog voltage from the light absorption type sensor in digital from which is microcontroller bus-compatible. The software performs necessary arithmetic processing of this value. The output is displayed on 3 1/2 digit LCD. A Hex keypad allows the access to various user-friendly features including variable baud rate for serial transmission. Real-time clock operation etc. The instrument can be used both off-line and on-line. In future, the instrument can be upgraded on light-scattering principle to have better resolution without any change in hardware.
