This paper presents a systematic analysis of heat transfer characteristics of a multilayer insulation, which is lined with a wall on one side and another side is exposed to a convective atmosphere. The calculations of optimum thickness, for whichheat transfer is minimum, are done by applying variational principle technique. The results of heat transfer are compared with single layer insulation for constant volume of insulation. Improvement in reduction of heat transfer has been observed inmultilayer insulation. The contact resistance between the layers plays an important role to reduce the heat transfer rate. The dependence of heat transfer on Biot number has been studied and presented graphically in this paper.
