I feel greatly honoured for the opportunity given to me by the Jorhat Chapter of the Indian Society of Soil Science to deliver the 22nd Dr. S.P. Raychaudhuri Memorial Lecture. I pay my humble homage and tribute to late Dr. S.P. Raychaudhuri whose outstanding contributions in the field of Agricultural Sciences as a whole and to Soil Science in particular are legendary. In memory of this renowned and great soil scientist of our country, and keeping in view Dr. Raychaudhuri's devotion on characterization and management of soil resources in India, I have selected the topic entitled, "Geo-informatics for Appraisal and Management of Land Resources towards Optimizing Agricultural Production in the Country -Issues and Strategies" which is so close to the heart of Dr. Raychaudhuri.
