Sustainable Soil Management Models in Horticultural Systems

摘要

I am greatly privileged and honoured by the invitation of the Indian Society of Soil Science to deliver the 42nd Dr. R.V. Tamhane Memorial lecture. I indeed am very happy because I am standing in the same place where I began my education in agriculture and in the same department where I began to learn soil science. Dr. Tamhane has left indelible marks in "Soil Science in India" and is one of the pioneers in making governments to realise the need for conservation of soils and need to have soil testinglaboratories. In this temple of education I pay my homage to Dr. R.V. Tamhane. I have selected the topic "Sustainable Soil Management Models in Horticultural Systems" to speak on this occasion for two reasons. One, this topic is closest to the heart ofDr. Tamhane and the other, being "International year of soils" this is the occasion to showcase that we do have sustainable soil management systems in existence that can be replicated elsewhere for the benefit of the society.
