Managing Coastal Saline Soils for Productive and Resilient Agriculture under Changing Environment

I feel greatly honoured to deliver the 14th Dr. R.S. Murthy Memorial Lecture at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Mohanpur. I am thankful to the Indian Society of Soil Science, New Delhi and the Kalyani Chapter of Indian Society of Soil Science for giving me this opportunity. I also feel greatly privileged to join the group of eminent scientists who delivered the memorial lecture in the past, since its inception in 2002. Dr. Ramaswamayya Shankara Murthy made outstanding contributions in the fieldof soil survey and land use planning, particularly in the domain of pedology, remote sensing and land evaluation. I take this opportunity to pay my humble homage and tribute to Dr. Murthy who was an eminent soil scientist and the founder director of ICAR-Na-tional Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning, Nagpur. For this lecture, I have chosen to speak on the topic "Managing coastal saline soils for productive and resilient agriculture under changing environment". In this paper, an excerpt of the lecture delivered with respect to coastal West Bengal (Sundarbans) is presented.
