A series of copper(II) complexes of the anti-cancer drug analogue 1, 5-bis(2-pyridylmethylene)thiocarbonohydrazide (H_2L) was synthesized from acid solution. The single crystal structures of two asymmetric, binuclear, complexes [{Cu_2(HL)(H_2PO_4)_2}_2][NO_3]_2 centre dot 2H_2O and [{Cu_2(HL)(CF_3CO_2)_3}_2] and two mononuclear, monomeric complexes [Cu(H_3L)(H_2O)][ClO_4]_3 centre dot 2H_2O and [{Cu(H_3L)(NO_3)_2]NO_3 were solved. The binuclear complexes are dimeric with three-atom-anion bridges. Selective removal of one copper ion gives mononuclear monomers. The primary magnetic exchange is between copper(II) centres within a planar binuclear unit with weaker interactions via anion or sulfur bridges.
