Obesity is a global problem that carries major public health consequences. The federal governments' health agenda, Healthy People, has addressed reducing obesity as one of the major public health objectives. Despite this attention the past 20 years has seen an unprecedented increase in obesity for both children and adults in all ethnic groups (Flegal, Carroll, Ogden, & Curtin, 2010; Ogden, Carroll, Curtin, Lamb & Flegal, 2010). This issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (JAANP) is focused on obesity research. We chose this topic because we, like our contributing authors, are driven by an understanding of the magnitude of the health burden obesity causes as we bear witness to its effects in all domains of people's lives.
