A 4--year-old male Shat Pei was evaluated because of a 2-day history of vomiting, listlessness, stretching, and what the owner described as cramping. The dog had been willing to drink but was unable to avoid vomiting shortly after drinking. Physical examination revealed a distended abdomen, signs of pain on palpation of the abdomen, and cachexia. Abnormalities on serum biochemical analyses revealed hyperproteinemia (9.8 g/dl; reference range, 5.7 to 7.4 g/dl), high BUN concentration (26 mg/dl; reference range, 6.0 to 22.0 mg/dl), hypokalemia (3.1 mmol/L; reference range, 3.5 to 5.5 mmol/L), and hypochloremia (99 mmol/L; reference range, 105 to 120 mmol/L). Radiographs were obtained to thoroughly evaluate the cranial portion of the abdomen, diaphragm, and caudal portion of the thoracic cavity (Fig 1).
