Waste management: small animal practice

Little has been written about management of wastes in small animal practice. Landfill space is limited, and traditional methods of waste disposal such as incineration create environmental risks and pollute the environment. Veterinary hospitals can become more environmentally friendly and cost-efficient by reducing the amount of waste they generate. Veterinarians have a responsibility to become aware of the types and amounts of hazardous and nonhazardous wastes generated at their practices, reduce orminimize the amount of waste generated, recycle wastes when appropriate, and otherwise dispose of wastes legally and properly in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
