Global health organizations hope to eliminate rabies transmission from dogs to humans in the Americas within the next two years. The World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization, which serves as a regional office for the WHO, hope to accomplish that goal by the end of 2015. Dr. Victor J. del Rio Vilas, zoonosis coordinator in Panaftosa, a scientific section of the PAHO, said the rabies case load has declined, but rabies remains a neglected disease and a "morally unacceptable" presence in the current level of global development.
