The majority of women presenting with early-stage breast cancer face a myriad of treatment options, including multiple types of primary surgical treatment. Within the past century, options have expanded from radical mastectomy as the sole standard treatment to new choices, including partial mastectomy, oncoplastic resection, total mastectomy with or without reconstruction, and contralateral breast procedures. The availability of these different yet equally effective surgical options, together with the many personal factors involved in the choice of breast cancer surgery, provides an ideal opportunity for patient education and shared decision-making.
