Creating a New Curriculum to Prepare for the 2013 ABR Testing Changes: An Academic Residency Perspective

In response to the ABR testing changes set to take place in 2013, we formed the 2010 Resident Education Committee. The goal of the committee was to address the impacts these changes would have on our training program. Specifically, we wanted to ensure drat our residents are adequately prepared for the "core examination" at 36 months of training, which will test all 11 clinical categories as well as physics and be first taken by the class entering in 2010. Our primary focuses were to maintain the educational ideals of resident training and to incorporate the various interpretations and mandates of the governing bodies.All training programs will need to design their curricula to accommodate the intention and spirit of the ABR-imposed changes. In this regard, leaders in radiology have published comments about the potential positive and negative impacts on training programs expected from these changes [1-7]. However, specifics of how to accomplish curricular changes have not been published, and the ABR has not dictated specifics with regard to the resident curriculum.
