The article is confusing because it mixes and matches diagnostic studies with mammographic screening. Mammographic screening is, of course, the only test that the authors mention that has been shown to actually be able to decrease deaths. The decrease in breast cancer deaths is not trivial. Approximately 15,000 to 20,000 lives are being saved each year, due primarily to screening. This would be higher if more women participated, but they are now being discouraged from screening.
