Large and complex structures are being built to meet the growing demands and are exposed to severe and harsh environmental conditions. Reliable measurement of strains over long periods is an essential requirement when monitoring important structures like prestressed concrete bridges, containment vessels, offshore structures pipes etc. The type of strain and method of installation should provide reliable measurement of strain over a long period. Among the different strain sensors available, fiber optic sensors are found to be reliable for long-term monitoring of structures. Experimental studies were carried out to evaluate the performance of Extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometric (EFPI) fiber optic sensors for strain measurements. The stability and reliability of fiber optic sensor for long-term strain measurement in civil engineering structures is demonstrated from the laboratory studies.
