Timothy Leary (1920-1996) was an influential American psychologist and a prolific writer on psychedelic experiences. Most notably in the 1960s and 1970s he impacted on the political and societal thinking on mind-altering drugs including especially LSD and those which were derived from local and traditional knowledge (like Psilocybe spp.). With the experiments on psychedelic substances during his 'Harvard Years' (1960-1963), Timothy Leary may have had more impact on what later one was called ethnopharmacology, than we are aware of. However, he is better known for the public activities in later years, where he was a person whom J. Penner aptly describes as a 'mystic and self-proclaimed high priest' and an 'iconic rebel and trickster' (p. xv).However, his Harvard years were an academically successful period during which he shifted his interests from a more behavioural psychology focus to research on psilocybin (derived from the famous Mexican hallucinogenic mushrooms) and on LSD.
