A novel Cu-azido complex modified hexa-Cu~(II) substituted sandwich-type phosphotungstate [Cu(en)_2] {[Cu_2(en)_2(μ-1l-N_3)_2(H_2O)]_2[Cu_6(en)_2(H_2O)_2(B-α-PW_9O_(34))_2]}?6H_2O (1) (en=ethylene-diamine) has been prepared under hydrothermal conditions and structurally characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectra, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1 displays a beautiful 1-D chain architecture constructed from sandwich-type [Cu_2(en)_2(μ-l,l_N-3)2(H_2O)]_2[Cu_6(er)_2(H_2O)_2(B-α-PW_9O_(34))_2]~(2-) units and [Cu(en)_2]~(2+) linkers. To our knowledge, 1 represents the first hexa-Cu~(II) sandwiched phosphotungstate with supporting Cu-azido complexes.
