摘要

From a starting point of: "Is restoration a viable, sustainable option for the European shellfish cultivation industry"? the presentation will review the realities of the impact of climate change, competitive demands on scarce inshore resources, market economics, and Regulatory pressures/support. Industry concerns will be charted, over chronic deterioration in formally designated shellfish growing waters and governmental responses (European Union and Member State level) and catastrophic events, such as the impact on the sector of recent oil tanker sinkings in the eastern Atlantic. Additional burdens on shellfish growers will also be reviewed, from escalating prices of plastic products (petroleum derived) to attacks on mussel lines in the Mediterranean by shoals of sea bream. The impact of the current review of the common fisheries policy of the EU and the proposed amendments to the financial support program for the fisheries and aquaculture sector will also be addressed.
