Re: Use of Aquamid as a filler for facial rejuvenation in orientals. J Plast Reconstr Aesthet Surg 2009;62:1245-9.

We wish to comment on the article by Yagi et al. that is entitled 'Use of Aquamid as a filler for facial rejuvenation in orientals' and was published in the October, 2009 issue of the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. The authors examined the usefulness of Aquamid as a filler for facial rejuvenation in two representative areas (the nasolabial fold and the nasojugal groove) in orientals. They concluded that Aquamid was safe as a filler because the complication rate was relatively low (0.082%). We agree that this study is worthy of attention given that it is an extremely large-scale study (n = 5676) and is the first report to examine the effects of polyacrylamide injection in orientals. However, we wish to highlight some limitations of the study that indicate that the true complication rate associated with Aquamid use as a filler for the face may be higher than that reported. First, the areas of the face that were assessed were only the nasolabial fold and the nasojugal groove. Even if these two areas are suitable for Aquamid injection, this does not necessarily mean that Aquamid is also safe as a filler for the rejuvenation of other areas of the face.
