Improvised fat transferer and cannula for cases of unexpected fat grafting needs during liposuction

In many countries, liposuction is the most commonly performed aesthetic procedure. It has been promoted as a safe, easy-to-leam, outpatient procedure. Nevertheless, it is a procedure not exempt from complications. Among aesthetic complications, overcorrection, due to excessive fat removal, results in irregularities and depressions and this is one of the main reasons for patients' dissatisfaction. In view of this, whenever an overcorrection is produced and detected, it should be corrected during the same surgical act. Methods of correction include Liposuction around the area of depression if possible, and simultaneous fat grafting.However, fat grafting requires especially designed instruments, which are not always readily available, particularly if the need for grafting was not foreseen. When defects are small the instruments usually required are a fat transferer and a cannula for lipofiUing, and these can be improvised with a simple 14 gauge intravenous Teflon catheter and its needle (Abbocath-T, Abbott Ireland, Sligo, Ireland) widely used for venipuncture.
