Myocardia homogenates from a variety of adult (guinea pig, rabbit, rat, cat, and dog) and fetal (guinea pig, rabbit) mammals, were incubated (in vitro) for 45 min in tris buffer pH 7.4 and at 38 deg C. Resulting thin layer chromatographic analysis of their phospho-lipid profiles revealed:noticeable preferential deacylation of cardiolipin (CL), concomitant with the formation of monolysocardiolipin (MLCL) and reduction of the CL level in all the myocardia studied;lyso alkenyl phosphatidyi ethanolamine (LPE) and lyso alkenylphosphatidyi choline (LPC) are also produced but in minute concentrations;Extending the incubation to 1h yielded.N-acyl phosphatidyiethanolamine (NAPE) in the cat and dog cardiac muscle only;andProlonging the incubation to 3 h yields a gradual increase in theproduction of NAPE that mirrors the decrease in CL with the concurrent formation of MLCL.
