Quantitative Determination of the Herbicide Bialaphos in Fermentation Broth by TLC with Scanning Densitometry

TLC on Sorbfil plates has been used to separate the herbicide biala-phos from by-products (other amino acids, peptides, and pigments) in the broth used for culture of Streptomyces hygroscopicus. Dipping in 0.3 % ninhydrin solution was used for visualization and subsequent quantitation. High speed scanning densitomctry and high performance liquid chromatography have been used for quantitation and the results compared. Coefficients of variation were < 5.0 %.
