The thin layer chromatographic (TLC) behavior of chlorosulfatcs of the rare earths (RE) Y~(3+), Ce~(3+), Sm~(3+), Nd~(3+), Eu~(3+), Gd~(3+), Tb~(3+), Dy~(3+), and Yb~(3+) on TLC plates coated with plain, mixed and impregnated adsorbents is described.Various aqueous salt solutions were used as the impregnants. Most of these metal complexes can be successfully separated from their mixtures. Variation of R_F values on plain, mixed and impregnated sorbent beds was achieved. Silica gel H yields more compact spots than silica gel G or other conventional coating materials. As elucnt, aqueous salt solutions were found to be more suitable for selective separations than organic solvents. A linear correlation was established between R_F values and ionic radiior magnetic moments of RE chlorosul-fates. Spectrophotometry was used for the quantitation of yttrium Chlorosulfate after its TLC separation from neodymium and ytterbium chlorosulfates. The molar absorptivity was 5.0 X 10~3 L mol~(-1) cm~(-1).
