In callus cultures of Lobelia erinus L., two types of morphologically different shoots (with long or short internodes) were regenerated. Secondary metabolism (polyacetylene production) in the regenerants, together with callus, suspension cells and shoot cultures from the intact plants, was determined. The polyacetylene contents in the calli and suspension cells were almost 2-4 times higher than that of the intact plant. The polyacetylene production in the regenerated shoots gradually decreased concurrent with subculturing, particularly in the regenerants with long internodes that were morphologically similar to the intact plants.
