PBS idling five Pennsylvania met mines on costs, rules uncertainty

Blaming escalating costs and uncertainty over federal pollution control rules, PBS Coals is idling five underground and surface metallurgical coal mines in Pennsylvania. The production cutbacks amount to half of the company's operating mines. PBS also is reducing production at two other deep mines. Altogether, the actions cut the Severstal subsidiary's workforce by more than one quarter.
