Earlier this year, the legislature in my home state of Connecticut voted to allow nurse practitioners and other advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), including certified nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, and clinical nurse specialists, to practice independently without physician supervision or a collaborative practice agreement. For newly licensed APRNs, this arrangement will follow an initial 3-year period during which a collaborative practice arrangement with a physician is to be in place.
