Lemierre syndrome and descending necrotizing mediastinitis following dental extraction.

Thoracic infections of odontogenic origin are rare but potentially fatal. They usually develop from a cervical space infection of dental source extending into the chest. Cases occurring secondary to a dental extraction in the absence of preexisting apparent infection are scarce. The coexistence of a descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM) and Lemierre syndrome after a dental extraction has not been previously reported. This article describes a case of Lemierre syndrome with DNM after the prophylactic extraction of third molars in a healthy young adult. The clinical presentation, management, and review of the literature are presented.
