Gilson et al. describe in their paper(l) the content of a revised guidance document of the World Health Organization (WHO),(2) which was developed to help ensure patient access to essential controlled medicines. The development of these guidelines was the first key milestone of the Access to Opioid Medications in Europe prject (ATOME) funded by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission (www.atome-project.eu).
