When I was first assigned as action editor to the manuscript by Cassell and Symon (2011), my initial reaction was one of excitement and trepidation. As someone who has relied primarily on quantitative methods, but with some work in qualitative methods, I was excited to learn more about the undercurrent of understanding among my peers regarding the quality of qualitative methods. On the other hand, my trepidation stemmed from my own experiences with qualitative methods. These experiences have led me to a conclusion very similar to that of Cassell and Symon: we need more training in qualitative methods.
