In this paper, a semi-analytical method based on a Fourier expansion technique and transmission line modelling has been proposed for the full-wave modal analysis of optical waveguides. As a first step, the dielectric waveguide is periodically repeated in one transverse coordinate direction with an appropriate period. The resulting periodic structure is analysed for the determination of various eigen-modes by the use of a systematic matrix approach. If the period assumes large values, the modes of the periodic structure approach those of the original waveguide. Using this method, we will show that complex propagation constants and field distributions of the guided modes of lossy anisotropic optical waveguides having arbitrary cross sections and index tensors can be determined.
