Association between pod and kernel characteristics in Valencia groundnut, Arachis hypogaea L. subsp. fastigiata var. fastigiata

Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is classified in to fourmajor botanical types namely Valencia bunch, Spanishbunch, Virginia bunch and Virginia runner. Among thesethe botanical type, Valencia bunch (Arachis hypogaea L.subsp. fastigiata vat. fastigiata) consists of more of threekernel pods, sweet flavour and taste than other botanicalforms. At United States of America, Valencia bunchvarieties are grown in Eastern New Mexico State andWestern Texas due to their shorter duration and suitabilityto the short growing period of the region. All other formsare long-duration types and hence could not be grown inthe limited growing period. In the yield improvementprogramme of Valencia groundnut, the knowledge onassociation between pod and kernel characteristics wouldhelp the breeder to formulate effective selectionprogramme. Hence an attempt has been made to assessthe association among these characteristics in segregatingpopulations of crosses involving Valencia groundnutgenotypes.
