Academician Vladimir Pavlovich Linnik—The founder of modern optical engineering (On the 120th anniversary of his birth)

Senior fellow of the S. I. Vavilov State Optical Institute and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Pavlovich Linnik (1889–1984) made an outstanding contribution to all sections of optical engineering, from the study and creation of devices for improving visibility, such as microscopes, telescopes, viewing tubes, etc.; devices for monitoring surface quality and microgeometry, such as microinterferometers, microprofilometers, etc.; diverse astronomical devices, including a 6-m stellar interferometer, to the discovery and development of methods of dynamic wave-front correction, such as adaptive informational telescopes and laser systems. He showed that he was not only a profound researcher but also a brilliant engineer-inventor.
