Prevalence of banana yellow Sigatoka disease caused by Mycosphaerella musicola in Tamil Nadu.

Banana fields were surveyed in 34 villages of seven districts of Tamil Nadu to record the incidence of yellow Sigatoka disease (YSD) caused by Mycosphaerella musicola in major banana growing areas of Coimbatore, Mettupalayam, Erode, Pollachi, Dindugal, Theni and Trichy districts of Tamil Nadu at different growth stages and in different cultivars in 2012. YSD occurred in 86% of the 34 banana fields surveyed and the incidence ranged from 11% to 80%. Plant samples were taken from 34 fields where all plants showed YSD symptoms. Mycosphaerella musicola were identified based on symptom appearance and was confirmed by morphological characteristics. The survey resulted in a wide range of infection and severity of YSD by M. musicola from different banana cultivars in the major banana growing areas. YSD caused more damage to leaves which adversely affected the yield and quality of fruits.
