Fine coal treatment started late in Indian coal washeries as the quality of fines were within acceptable limit but with increase in mechanized mining and depletion of the good quality coal reserves, the fine coal treatment became essential in most of the coal washeries. Till today, froth flotation is the main method of beneficiation of fine coal but it has many limitations and the yield is poor. The enhanced gravity separator like Falcon Concentrator has the capability of handling large tonnage of fine coal over a wide range of size. The principle of gravity separation and its application to Falcon Concentrator and how the limitation of other gravity separation equipment has been overcome by Falcon Concentrator has been discussed in this article. The application data and the brief specification have also been highlighted.
