For formulating appropriate maintenance strategy for a shovel machine used in opencast coal mine it is often essential to evaluate the health of the machine to avoid unexpected breakdowns. Failure of capital intensive shovel machine and their consequences have a strong impact on production cost. Operating cost of a shovel machine in its life time has a great role to play. So maintenance decisions should not be made on an adhoc basis as problem occurs but should be planned based on the scientific analysis of failure pattern of the machine.In this paper, an attempt has been made to evaluate the health of a shovel machine and its subsystem based on failure data using statistical technique. Nature of failure pattern is carried out. Time between failure (TBF) vs cumulative frequency is plotted to reveal nature of failure rate. Failure behaviour of critical subsystem has a great influence on availability of the machine as a whole. The machine has been divided into six subsystems and a fault tree has been developed for shovel. Total time on test (TTT) plotting indicates clearly the health of the machine and its subsystem under studies and optimal maintenance strategies are mentioned.
