The rate of reactions of carboxylic acids (acetic, acrylic and methacrylic) with epichlorohydrin catalyzed by chromium(Ill) acetate at 80 degreesC was measured in selected organic solvents. Different reactivity orders for the individual reacting systems were observed. For acetic acid the fastest reaction rate was in 1,4-dioxane. The same solvent turned out to be the worst for methacrylic acid addition. The relationship between dielectric constant or donor-acceptor parameters of solvents and rate constants of the addition are discussed. Solvent polarity in the system with acetic acid seems to, affect the addition rate. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. [References: 19]
