Coal power aids in electricity sector recovery

As electricity generators struggle to recover from the collapse of the merchant sector, some of those that have been able to make the greatest progress have leaned heavily on coal-fired generation to spark their convalescence. In tandem with strategic corporate decision-making, those struggling electricity generators with substantial baseload coal capacity are beginning to see their efforts translate into results. NRG Energy, for example, in bankruptcy only a few months ago, posted (relatively) solid earnings in its first quarter back from Chapter 11, and the company cited the performance of its coal plants as a major reason for its performance.
