Effect of integrated use of organic manures, biofertilizers with inorganic nitrogen on nutrient composition and uptake at different growth stages of medicinal plant coleus (Coleus forskohlii)

A field experiment was conducted on medicinal coleus (Coleus forskohlii Briq.) (cv. K-8) at Herbal Garden, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad on a fine loamy, mixed hyperthermic, typic haplustept soil during latekharif 2005-2006 to study the effect of organic manures (different doses of castor cake, FYM), bio-fertilizer (Azospirillum, phosphorous solubilizing bacteria) and inorganic nitrogenous fertilizer (different levels) on dry matter production, nutrient composition and uptake of the nutrients (N, P, K andS). Conjunctive use of 20 kg N ha~(-1) with organic manures (FYM @ 2.51 ha~(-1) + castor cake @ 0.251 ha~(-1)) and bio-fertilizers (T_(12)) resulted in higher dry matter production, nutrient composition and uptake of the nutrients (N, P, K and S). The treatment 20 kg N ha~(-1) + FYM @ 2.51 ha~(-1) + Castor cake @ 0.251 ha~(-1) + BF (T_(12)) was found to be at par with 40 kg N ha~(-1) (T_3) indicating saving of 50% N through conjunctive use of organic manures and bio-fertilizers with inorganic nitrogen.
