Estimation of solanesol in tobacco and non-tobacco plants from Solanaceae family

Solanesol is the starting material for the synthesis of vitamin K2, vitamin E, coenzyme Q9, coenzyme Q10. It is found in many plants of the genus Nicotiana of the family Solanaceae. Other members of the family known to contain solanesol are mostly cultivated species like tomato, potato, eggplant, pepper etc. Solanesol was estimated in various plants of Solanaceae family collected across the area nearby Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, using High Performance Liquid Chromatography and found that Nicotianatabacum is the richest source of solanesol (0.85 to 3.75%). On the other hand, Solatium tuberosum, Solatium melongena, Solatium lycopersicum, Capsicum annum contain solanesol to an extent of 0.30 to 0.40%, while Datura stramonium, Solanum nigrum, Nicandra physaloides, Cestrum nocturnum and Solanum xanthocarpum contain solanesol to an extent of 0.05 to 0.25%.
