Or so Terry Hall sang in 1981 - an era when a group who had christened themselves "Madness" could advertise records and gigs without being castigated for their lack of political correctness. It is all the more telling to note that writers of the calibre and popularity of Dickens felt "no account could be given of the national character without a stop at a lunatic hospital". One is somewhat ashamed to confess that the history lesson begins with the introduction, wherein Millard Fillmore became US President after the death of Zachary Taylor in 1850. Tumultuous events led to tandem developments - the earliest moves towards emancipation and the "state and federal constructions of insane asylums".
