Ethics and Ethical Challenges in Library Instruction

The role of librarian has been changing especially in re-gard to teaching. Little has been written about the ethical issues librari-ans face in the role of teacher and in relation to other faculty membersand students. With the current increase in attempted censorship of aca-demics it is clear that librarians need to take an active role in protectingacademic freedoms for themselves as well as their collections. There isthe additional issue as to the type of ethics they teach students in libraryinstruction sessions and in their own publishing. It is essential that librar-ians develop a more defined role in the academic landscape and identifythe ethical issues most pertinent to them as they take on these modifiedroles.
