US railroads' coal shipments up 3.8 percent in week ending February 9

Coal shipments on US railroads were up 3.8 percent while coke shipments were down 36 percent in the week ending February 9, according to the Association of American Railroads. Coal shipments totaled 140,042 carloads in the 2008 week, up from 134,963 carloads in the year-ago week. Year to date, coal shipments were up 2.2 percent to 835,057 carloads. For coke, US railroads shipped 3,636 carloads in the 2008 week, down from 5,713 carloads in the year-ago week. Year to date, coke shipments were down 34.3 percent to 22,141 carloads. On BNSF, coal shipments were down 1 percent to 48,384 carloads in the 2008 week. Year to date, coal shipments were up 3.2 percent to 289,826 carloads.
