The Medical School of Salerno developed in a context of cosmopolitan activities and reached the peak of success through the ability of its doctors, both men and women. Most particularly, the school gave to the history of international medicine a name that is both authoritative and illustrious. This particular name is that of Trotula de Ruggiero, a celebrated doctor from 11th century Salerno. She was also a philosopher, a teacher, a scientist, a writer and she reached the heights of renown and even fame in the chronicles of her time through her acute medical abilities acquired by assiduously tending the sick.
