The 2001 ASCCP Consensus Guidelines: 'One Giant Step'

The recent publication of the 2001 consensus guidelines for the management of women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and the associated algorithms presented in this journal represent the culmination of a major effort by the leaders of the American Society of Cytology and Cervical Pathology and others to standardize the care of preneoplastic disease of the cervix based on the best available evidence. These guidelines, combined with the guidelines for the management of abnormal cytologic results, lay the framework that clinicians throughout the country can use to help manage abnormal cervical cytologic and biopsy results.
