For structural applications, dimensional tolerance has to be controlled tightly. Abrasive grinding is therefore frequently applied to meet the requirement. As the hardness of ceramics is high, a diamond wheel is used for grinding purposes. Due to the importance of the grinding process to alumina products, considerable research activities have been focused on the process [1-3]. Previous studies indicated that the strength after grinding depends strongly on the grinding parameters [4]. To ensure the surface quality, the truing treatment of the diamond wheel is usually applied before grinding. The truing treatment ensures a constant depth of grinding. However, the effect of the truing treatment of the diamond wheel on the strength of ceramics has not been fully analysed. In the present study, the effect of the truing process on the strength of alumina specimens is investigated.
