摘要

The demand for high purity aluminium in various technological applications is increasing, and economical production methods are being developed through extensive research projects [1,2]. Among several purification processes, the fractional solidification process has commerica] merits for its low cost of production facilities as well as the feasibility of continuous production [3,4]. The underlying idea of the fractional solidification process is to apply strong fluid flow by means of stirring during solidification to induce macrosegregation, which leads to purification of the solid. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of fluid flow on the reduction of solute contents using about 99.9% Al as a model system in an effort to produce high purity aluminium using fractional solidification processing.
