The People of the Sea: Environment, Identity and History in Oceania

This book is about the multiple ways of interaction between the peoples of “Oceania” and the sea, and how “the ocean shaped societies” in the period 1770–1870 AD. But note that D’Arcy’s “Oceania” is not the usual one, comprising Melanesia, Polynesia, and Micronesia. Nor is it equivalent to Remote Oceania, although he claims it is (page 1). It is about what he calls the “truly Oceanic” islands of Polynesia (including Fiji, but excluding New Zealand) and Micronesia.
