Influence of the reinforcement phase on the corrosion of aluminium composite coatings

The ability to deposit metal matrix composite (MMC) coatings on the surface of aluminium alloys has the potential to expand the scope of engineering applications of these materials. Composite coatings reinforced with discontinuous ceramic particles enhance the substrate's tribological properties. The aqueous corrosion of aluminium MMCs reinforced with a discontinuous particulate phase has not been extensively investigated, when compared with other properties such as mechanical and tribological. Of these MMCs, aluminium alloys reinforced with SiC, AI2O3, graphite, boron or mica particles have been studied [1-12]. The most common electrolyte solution used is distilled water containing NaCl [1-5]. Investigative methods implemented in these studies have ranged from simple immersion to several electrochemical techniques [1 — 12].
