The results of a complex examination of a spindle drive unit of a profile-grinding machine for a case involving bearing support failure are presented. A procedure, intended to examine a spindle drive unit by means of numerical models and experimental data, has been developed. A procedure for calculating the diagnostic parameter (unit's compliance) is suggested. The reasons for low reliability of the applied lubricants are revealed. The necessity to check-up the resistance of Russian lubricants against environment impact and coolants used for repairing the spindle drive units instead of imported ones is grounded.
